Concrete Contractor in East Liverpool, OH

East Liverpool is about twenty-five miles from our shop in Beaver, straight down the river on PA-68. It is a real drive and we are not going to pretend otherwise, but it is a straight one, and it is under forty minutes. We cross into Ohio for work regularly and we do not price the trip differently than we price a job in Beaver County. Dave Felouzis has been pouring concrete on this stretch of the Ohio River for more than twenty-five years, and the ground on the Ohio side behaves differently enough that it is worth explaining.

East Liverpool Sits on Clay, and That Changes Everything Under the Slab

This town became the Pottery Capital of the World for a reason. The clay deposits under East Liverpool are what built it, and they are still down there under your driveway.

Clay is a difficult subgrade for concrete. It holds water instead of draining it, it swells when it is wet, and it shrinks back when it dries out. Then it freezes. That cycle is why so much older flatwork in this town has heaved, cracked at odd angles, or dropped at one corner while the rest of the slab stayed put. It is almost never the concrete that failed. It is what the concrete was sitting on.

A pour that is going to last here does not go directly on native clay. It goes on excavated and compacted stone, deep enough to get the slab off the clay and give water somewhere to go. That is more excavation and more base material than the same job in a sandier area would take, and it is the single biggest difference between a driveway that is still flat in fifteen years and one that starts moving in three.

If you already have a slab that lifts every spring and settles back every summer, that is the clay talking. Whether it is worth repairing or replacing depends on whether the base under it can be corrected without pulling the whole thing, and Dave will tell you straight which one you are looking at.

Brick Walks and the Climb Up From the River

East Liverpool is built on a slope. The streets step up from the riverfront in tiers, and a lot of the older residential blocks still have original brick walks, brick alleys, and stone retaining work from when the town was built.

That creates two practical problems on almost every job in the historic blocks. The first is transition. When a section of brick walk is replaced with concrete, the new work has to meet the old at the right elevation on both ends, or you have created a trip edge where there was not one before. Riser heights on steps have to stay consistent through the transition too, which sounds obvious and is the thing most often gotten wrong.

The second is holding the grade. On tiered lots the yard is only flat because something is holding it back, and on a lot of these properties that something is a century old stone wall that is bowing. Pouring a new patio or parking pad above a failing wall is money spent on top of a problem. We look at the wall first, and if it needs to be rebuilt we will say so before we quote the flatwork. Retaining walls are a large share of what we do on hillside properties for exactly this reason.

"Dave and his crew gave us the large patio we asked for as well as a wall repair. Great communication throughout the process. We would definitely use them again."
